Digital marketing company vs freelancer is one of the first decisions most business owners face. We’ll be upfront: we’re a digital marketing company, so you might expect us to tell you never to hire a freelancer. We won’t. Plenty of businesses are better off with a good freelancer, and some are better off with an agency. The choice really comes down to how much you need done and how much of it you want to manage yourself.
When a freelancer is the smarter choice
If your need is narrow and clear, a freelancer is often the better deal. Say you run a small cafe on the Mall Road and you just want someone to design and post on Instagram three times a week. You don’t need a team for that. A skilled freelancer will likely do it well, for less, and you’ll talk directly to the person doing the work.
The same goes for one-off jobs, like setting up a single ad campaign or fixing a few pages on your website. If you’re comfortable steering the overall direction yourself, a freelancer can be a great fit.
The main risk is that everything rides on one person. If they fall sick, take on too many clients, or disappear in the middle of peak season, you feel it straight away.
When a company makes more sense
Things change when your marketing has several moving parts. Ads on Google and Instagram, a website that needs to convert, SEO, tracking, reports. Each of these is its own skill, and it’s rare for one person to be genuinely good at all of them.
An agency also gives you some continuity. If one person is unavailable, someone else knows your account. And because they’re used to working across channels, they’re more likely to notice things like your ads bringing people to a page that doesn’t load properly on mobile.
You will usually pay more for that. Whether it’s worth it depends on how much revenue good marketing can bring you.
Digital marketing company vs freelancer: questions to ask either one
Can they show you results from a business similar to yours, with actual numbers, not just a nice testimonial? Who exactly will be working on your account? How will they track calls, form fills and WhatsApp messages? What will the monthly report actually show you?
And the one we’d push hardest on: will your ad accounts, website and analytics be in your name? They should be. Always. It’s surprisingly common for business owners to lose years of data because whoever they hired set everything up under their own login and then moved on. Don’t let that be you, whoever you choose.
